All you need to know about canvas paintings

What are canvas panels?

Canvas is a coarse or soft textile fabric that is frequently used in tasks that may require strength, such as some bags, sail ships, and even some tents, etc. Also, a type of canvas is commonly used in painting and it is one of the most popular mediums that have been painted on for decades. Canvas, with its luxurious texture and wonderful texture, which add more beauty to art paintings, in short, canvas is a coarse or soft textile fabric that is used in many industries from (rice) and tents to painting and printing. The canvas used for printing is a mixture of polyester and cotton.
After the Industrial Revolution, it did not take the factories much time to discover that it was possible to print on canvas and obtain a final result very similar to those of the original hand-painted paintings. Currently, pictures and art are printed on canvas and stretched onto a hidden wooden frame to give a fixed dimension to the image Or the drawing and this method is called Gallery wrap

Stages of preparing the canvas by printing on canvas

The first step: choose the image

The photos are divided into two parts:

Photography:

They are the images captured by smart phones or professional cameras. Photographs in general are controlled by the capabilities of the camera that captures the image, and therefore there is a certain size that can be printed on. The print size cannot be enlarged to any size without a clear negative impact on the image quality.

Digital Art:

They are the images resulting from drawing or design by computer programs such as Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator or other programs, and this type of image can be designed into two parts:
1- Vector, which is the graphics and designs produced by some special programs such as Adobe Illustrator, and this type can be enlarged to any size without loss in accuracy, provided that 100% of the design components or drawing were created or drawn by the program from the popular formulas under this section are Al, EPS, and others.
2-Raster, this type is the case with photographs, and the drawing cannot be enlarged without a clear negative impact on the image’s resolution when printed. Designs produced by Photoshop, for example, are in Raster format.

Second step: preparing the image for printing

In this step, we adjust the lighting and colors of the image so that it appears properly after printing in a way that does not affect the final image. We also prepare the edges of the picture, which will be wrapped on the sides of the wooden frame, with high quality environmentally friendly inks. Eco-sulfate technology, odorless inks

Third Step: Printing on Canvas

There are many types, inks, technologies, and printers used for printing on canvas. Regarding the type of canvas used in printing, we can divide the common types into three sections:

Cotton:

This type is similar to that used in drawing and is made of 100% cotton and is distinguished by its luxury and natural shape, but its disadvantage is the difficulty of producing two panels that are 100% identical due to the difference in the texture and the mechanism of spreading it with ink each time.

Polyester_cotton:

This type is the most used and is usually 40% cotton and 60% polyester, and it is distinguished by its combination of the advantages of the previous two types.

Polyester:

Synthetically prepared from polyester, the advantage of this type is that it is easy to produce identical paintings, but its shape and plastic texture is flawed.

Also, the canvas used in printing varies according to its weight, and the weight is measured in GSM units or grams per square meter, and the greater the weight of the fabric, the more luxurious and rich its texture, and also the higher its price.
Another important point is the finish of the canvas, and the most common types can be divided into 3 sections as follows:
Glossy
Semi Glossy
Matt

Fourth step: screwing on the hidden wooden frame

The tensile process is one of the most important stages of preparing artboards and requires specialized devices or trained manpower with specialized tools, due to the difficulty of applying the necessary tensile strength without causing any damage to the cloth or cracking the ink. If less than required tensile strength is applied, the canvas may appear flabby, which negatively affects the beauty of the painting in general. The canvas is fixed to the wooden frame with a specialized stapler from the back so that the staples are hidden and not visible after hanging the board.

Fifth step: hanging the artboard.

Canvas design tips

1- Determine the appropriate size for the canvas

This step is very important, and you do not want to make the mistake of choosing a canvas (for example, a cross), only to discover later that you need a longitudinal plate. There are no specific main sizes and most of the specialized sites depend on the size of the image or drawing and the ratio of its length to its width to determine the appropriate print size.
Here are some basic rules regarding the size of your canvas:

very big :-

These panels come in sizes greater than 100 cm in length, before purchasing a canvas of this size, make sure to measure the space available to you on the wall and make sure that there is enough space to contain the painting, very large panels represent the role of the focal point on the wall or in the room.

Large :-

This size is usually between 80 and 100 cm in length. You can hang a plate of this size next to a group of other smaller panels. A painting or two of this size in one room is considered standard.

Center:-

Paintings in this size are between 60 and 70 cm in length, some paintings can be hung individually, but the middle paintings also appear beautifully when attached to other art paintings. If you choose paintings of this size, make sure that the paintings are the same size on both sides.

Small :-

Between 45 and 59 cm, this kind of size looks very nicely when placed on a shelf, piece of furniture or a short wall.

Mini: –

The smallest size is between 25 and 44 cm, in general any canvas of paper size or smaller is considered mini, you often see this type of panels sold in groups consisting of at least four panels.

2- Choose the appropriate drawing or image for the canvas

Have you decided that the right size for you is a tall, cross or square size? In this step, focus on the drawings or pictures if you like photographs that match the dimensions of those that you specified in the first step.
Choosing the right drawing may differ from one person to another and depends largely on the difference in artistic taste.
Ask yourself, do you like the calm abstract arts or the more detailed art? Do you prefer warm or stark colors? Is the decor of your room carrying the modern or classic character? Do you have other artboards to choose similar art?
In the end, the matter revolves around you, so make sure to acquire the painting or image that expresses you and your ambition. Art is a source of inspiration, so be sure to own a canvas that inspires you every day.
Art is a place of expression through color, content, and texture. While the décor of your home, such as books and floors, may be useful with certain rules in the field of interior design, we encourage you to choose the art that expresses you and that is important to you, above all, follow what your heart dictates to you and do not worry too much about the rules and basics, in short, choose what you like.

Here are some general tips for choosing the right shape for your canvas

Choose arts that are comparable or similar to the shape of the room or other art form that you may have previously been in the room
Buy a set of small size canvas panels, these sets look great on a shelf or over windows.
Mix up the auction house by adding wooden art or an iron sign.
Use frames to focus on your style.

Some general tips for choosing colors:

In general, add canvas panels to your room with colors that match those previously in the room to maintain consistent hues.
The background of your most important or largest piece of art should be the same color as the wall you hang on.
Review the color wheel when choosing complementary hues.
Use the same color, but in different shades. Canvas in light blue and white looks great on a deep blue wall.
Just choose art with shades of color already in your room. Most spaces must be no more than four colors in order to appear coordinated and tidy.
If you are confused, choose black and white arts. Black and white go well with everything and add a touch of luxury at the same time.
Keep the colors in your art painting in sizes consistent with the presence of these colors in the room. For example, if your room is in white and black and you have red pillows, choose a white and black art painting with a touch of red.
Take advantage of the mirrors in the room to reflect the hanging canvases. Mirrors give the impression of a larger room and double the appearance of paintings.

Canvas paintings prices

It is very difficult to determine an average price for canvas panels, as they differ from one location to another, and this is due to many factors, the most important of which are:
The cost of the rights to the painting or the image varies according to the price of the artist.
The difference in the cost of printing according to the different printers and inks used.
The difference in the cost of canvas according to the percentage of cotton in the canvas.
The difference in the cost of preparing the canvas according to its size.
The difference in the cost of external tires (if used).
Labor cost varies in different manufacturing countries.

Canvas frame

When it comes to canvas, there are two main options:
In the first option, the canvas is tightened on a hidden wooden frame and the image is complete around the edges, which creates a three-dimensional impression of the canvas as well, if you have a set of drawings and want to highlight one of them, this method may be suitable for you. It is worth noting that it is difficult to use this method in pictures and drawings that have important parts such as a human body or a hand, for example. For a long time, most interested people associated canvas frames with classicism. This link is not necessarily correct anymore. There are a lot of new frames with a modern character and great modern designs. If you’re looking for the classic feel, look for the wide and gilded frames.
